Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), are a major pillar in the black community and the first schools that educated black people. During slavery, it was illegal for black people to be educated. They had to sneak to and learn to read and write and risk being killed or punished. But the story didnt stop there! We are resilient, we are powerful and we are intelligent! Against the odds, risking death and before slavery was even abolished, the first black college was founded, in 1837, which was Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. As of today, there are 107 schools that are indentified by the US Department of Education as HBCUs. Even though HBCUs represent less than 5% of all colleges and Universities in the US, they confer 40% of all STEM degrees, 60% of all engineering degress, and 50% of teaching degrees for black people, according to the Howard County Public School system. According to the Thurgood Marshall Fund, and the Network Journal , in the USA among black people that graduate from HBCUs, 50% are professors at Non-HBCUs, 50% are lawyers and 80% of are judges.
