Black people were barred from the architecture profession, like many others years ago.  They couldn't get into the colleges to get the degrees, they couldnt work at the firms either, because they were black.  Through their resilience, intelligence and power, black architects paved the way for other black men and women to have a chance.  As of 2019 only 2% of the licensed architects in the USA were black.  There were many that paved the way including Norma Sklarek.  She was the first black woman to co-own an architecture firm in 1985, the first black female member of the American Institute of Architects in 1959.  As a result of the work of Norma, there are other pioneering Architects leading the way, like Michael Ford out of Detroit Michigan, who created a fun way for kids to learn about Architecture with his Hip Hop Architecture Camp.  Mike Ford is also an Architect for the first and only Universal Hip Hop Museum in NY. Do you know a black architect? Are you a black Architect?  Buy our I'm Black & Architect tees.
