As 2020, according to the American Bar Association, 5% of lawyers in the USA are black. That's a very small number. Black people are more entangled in the criminal justice system than white counterparts. Also according to the American Bar Association, in state trial courts, only 7% of the judges were black. In the Myth of the Colored Blind Judge book, by Pat K Chew, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, and Robert E Kelley, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business, they concluded that black people have a poor win rate in general and are more likely to win their cases, if they come before a black judge. That contributes to the disproportionate rate of black incarceration. Despite these statistics, we have great black lawyers who are answering the call to the bench and the court room.
